| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to explore and to identify success factors in large procurement projects. The Norwegian defense acquisition of four C-130J Hercules (transport planes) was compared with the Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA purchase of ten Torrens class RORO-ships (car carriers). Both projects were considered executed in an efficient manner and probably represent the two organizations’ best practice in project work. This research used the method of most different systems design. According to this design, common factors among the two projects are more likely to be the results of efficient project work, not the results from the surroundings since the two projects were diverse and performed in very different environments. The projects were analyzed and compared in three distinct perspectives; the strategic perspective, the project perspective and the organizational perspective. The strategic perspective explored how the projects were selected and discussed how the two organizations decided to initiate the projects. The project perspective considered how the project planning phase matched the execution face in the three parameters: time, cost and quality. The organizational perspective discussed how the materiel investments were transformed into business outcome. One of the main conclusions was that early contact between contractor and buyer (oftentimes established in previous contracts), led to more realistic and accurate project planning and implementation. Further, the study showed that neither of the projects were a result of strategic planning. Both projects emerged internally within their organizations in combination with outside influence. | en_US |
