Through the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), this study explores prominent officer competencies and personality traits for successful and unsuccessful platoon commanders. We compare our findings with the Norwegian Military Academy (NMA) officer competence model (consisting of three competency areas), and earlier research from NMA on preferred and unpreferred personality traits for the platoon commander. Our findings show that the cadets’ job analyses are representative of the NMA competence model. Norwegian cadets often describe, and thus emphasize, social competence more than the other two areas of competence. We also find a change in preferred personality traits for the platoon commander. In particular, the preferred degree of extroversion and agreeableness has changed in the last 20 years.nb_NO
